It must be the same anticipation with which we wait for spring that we wait for chilling nights that freeze the ground beneath us. Typically this drives all but the most menacing of fly fishers in beside a warm fire to sip whiskey laden ice cubes, or apple cider drenched in rum. For those who choose frigid, windy and wet mornings to rise before the sun…The opportunities are endless.
Wow, is that some crazy weather or what? It’s too warm and too wet out there. Outside of that though, it’s been a stellar steelhead season in southern Ontario great lakes tributaries. I really think the efforts of the Ontario Steelheaders stocking, and stream rehabilitation are giving the fishery, especially on lake Huron tributaries a much needed boost. If you aren’t already a member of the Ontario Steelheaders, consider becoming one today. Visit the Ontario Steelheaders website at: http://www.ontariosteelheaders.ca/

The End of Steelhead Season……or is it?
We’re lucky to have extended seasons to fly fish for great lakes steelhead and brown trout here. Most of our options close up on Dec. 31st. That doesn’t mean all of our options have been taken away from us though! Many brave souls stick to their addiction year round targeting steelhead in southern Ontario. We’ll still have a number of rivers open come the new year. An article in the Winter 2011 issue of Fly Fish Ontario Online Magazine will point you in the right direction for winter steelheading locations.
